History
Shergottite Achondrite (SNC)
Name: Zagami
Location: Katsina, Nigeria
Type: Shergottite Achondrite (SNC)
Zagami was recovered in 1962 in Katsina, Nigeria and is classified
as a Shergottite Achondrite (SNC). A total of 18 kilograms was recovered.
These Shergottite are basaltic (Volcanic) type rocks. Researchers believe
these come from Mars. Somewhere in the magma chamber this material
cooled and solidified about 1.2 billion years ago. An Asteroid or Comet impact
on Mars is the only way to have blown this material off the surfase and send it
flying our way. Mars is the closest planet large enough to have volcanos so it is
the most likely candidate.
This meteorite was never published in the Meteoritical Society Bulletin but some information is available.
